Health Services Management

Major changes in the area of health in Uruguay require professionals who have responsibilities in health organization management, or who aspire to have those responsibilities, to deepen their knowledge and administrative and management skills to be more effective in their daily work and to provide quality services.

Administration, jointly with health sciences and knowledge of the field of health, provide structure and methodology to organize resources and processes which guide management in achieving objectives and goals that improve the quality and efficiency of institutions.

This postgraduate course specializes in health management, bringing together different but related logics: the structure and methods of administrative thinking, the social application of health care, and the leadership needed today.

In addition to addressing typical topics of this specialization, the program is different from other proposals in various aspects related to occupational health integration, with a focus on working conditions and environment, and on healthy organizational factors, focusing on occupation and the working environment. Another aspect is the integration of risk, which allows us to assess the importance of risk for the allocation of resources and to identify those areas of greater incidence on service management, either for welfare or economic impact. It emphasizes the prevention of risks linked to patient safety, which highlights quality management, ethical-legal components, and the media and their implications, both in technical and operational aspects as in research.

Specialization contributes to building a strong critical mass in Uruguay’s health management. One of its pillars is research as an evidence-based learning tool, and it has an impact on the daily operation and decision-making process in health policies.

Specialization in Adult Intensive Care

Intensive therapy provides assistance to patients with pathophysiological alterations that are in a critical state and vital risk, but still may recover.

Care of the critically ill patient requires facing situations of vital crisis in a complex environment, with diagnostic and therapeutic technology in constant evolution. This is one of the areas of health care that has developed most rapidly in recent decades.

This training proposal, which is presented as a Postgraduate Specialization in Nursing in Adult Intensive Care, focuses on helping nursing professionals to develop their knowledge and skills to address such complex care, with suitable training for the type of service, security, and humanization. We follow the line of researchers that promote deepening the understanding of intensive care as an environment of professional complexity for nursing professionals.

Diabetology

This course, which belongs to the Institute of Welfare and Health, focuses on training specialists in diabetology for their work in the different diabetes services units in the health system. It aims to deepen the knowledge of the disease’s physiopathological and clinical bases to develop better skills in the different levels of care.

The emphasis is placed on educational-preventive approaches in order to train specialists in primary care strategies according to current health policy.

The program develops knowledge in diverse areas, both in the specialized field as well as in other areas that will provide support for the integral care of patients. Diabetes totally and intimately affects how an organism functions, so its management requires a broad knowledge of general medicine and, in complicated varieties, teamwork with other specialists and health professionals.

The Diabetology and Nutrition Society of Uruguay (SDNU) has highlighted the relevance of this program given the increase in people affected by this pathology, a situation that, without prevention and control programs with the necessary training of human resources, will have a negative impact on the health economy and undoubtedly on people’s quality of life.

Degree awarded: Specialist in Diabetology (recognized by the MEC)

Breastfeeding Guidance

Global and national health authorities promote breastfeeding and the timely and correct incorporation of complementary foods as one of the main strategies to reduce infant mortality and to improve general quality of life in society.

The nutrition of children under two years of age is of great interest, not only regarding the child’s immediate well-being, but also because this formative stage of life has a substantial and persistent impact on a child’s physical and mental development, as well as on the health state in adult life. Physical and mental development, in turn, determine people’s opportunities in the course of life, affecting their school performance and subsequent productivity.
